Chapter 12

Wanna be famous?

“Have you hidden a recording device inside my station?” Cythera’s wings curved outward, displaying her annoyance.

Amy arched an immaculately groomed eyebrow. “This is my first visit to this station or this town. When would I have had an opportunity to bug the place?”

Cythera fluttered her wings some more. “Then how did you know we were talking about you?”

Amy tapped the side of her head. “I’m mildly telepathic. An ability I inherited from a long dead dragon ancestor. I always know when I’m being gossiped about. And just to be clear, I despise it.”

I hopped onto the desk closest to Amy. “Greetings! In truth, we weren’t idly gossiping, but we were discussing talking to you about what happened to Nahla.”

“I’ve already been talked to. I told the angels everything I know.” She cocked her head. “I recognize you from the bookstore. You were with that dark-haired witch that didn’t smile much.”

“That’s the most perfect witch in the world, Zandra Crypt. I’m her familiar, Juno.”

“Crypt. Connected to the witches in Willow Tree Falls?” Amy’s eyes lit with interest.

“The very same. It’s a long and torrid tale of entanglement and affairs that, if you’re interested, I’ll entertain you with another time.”

Amy whipped out a card and set it on the desk in front of me. “I’ve always wanted to represent a Crypt witch. You hear tales about them everywhere you go. They must have incredible stories about their demon fighting. I’m seeing it now, a reality series following the adventures of the Crypt witches. We could do specials where they go demon hunting. They could take us on a tour of the prison beneath their cemetery. And we could do an old-timer tales special with the family’s wise women.”

I flicked my tail, failing to mask a chuckle. “They’re a private family. I’m sure they won’t want that kind of notoriety.”

“Everyone says that, but once they get a taste of fame, it changes them. And, of course, all the money and merchandising opportunities are impossible to resist. Sweat shirts. Coffee mugs. Cosmetics. Maybe a line in demon hunting equipment for the die-hards. How do you feel about having your face on a line of thermos flasks?”

“I’ll mention it to them the next time we speak.”

Cythera brusquely cleared her throat. “If you’re done selling your services to the fluffy, we need to ask a few more questions about Nahla.”

Amy held up a finger as her mobile snow globe buzzed. “One moment. I’m in the middle of a crucial negotiation. They’re offering less than we agreed upon, and I won’t have it. The warlock I represent, who shall remain nameless but is so handsome, he gets panties dropping at a hundred paces, has an incredible talent, and we won’t be shortchanged.” She tapped away on her mobile snow globe before looking up. “Proceed.”

“Let’s use an interview room,” Cythera said.

Amy nodded, her gaze on her mobile snow globe. “Lead the way.”

By the time we got into the room, she was muttering to herself as she sank into a seat.
